HPRA Graduate Programme FAQs

How can I apply for the HPRA Graduate Programme?

Applications for the programme are currently closed. This page will be updated when we will be accepting applications for the 2025 Graduate Programme.

What happens after I apply?

Shortlisting of applications

We will begin the shortlisting process once the closing date has passed. You will be contacted as soon as possible after shortlisting has been completed using the email address supplied on your application form to inform you if you have been shortlisted for interview or not.

If I am shortlisted, what happens at interview?

It will be a competency-based interview conducted by a recruitment panel. Questions will be asked in line with the required competencies for the role. Reviewing the role profile ahead of the interview should help you prepare for this!

What is a panel interview and how can I prepare for it?

A panel interview is where you will be interviewed by multiple members of the hiring panel simultaneously. A panel will comprise of a minimum of two people for the graduate placements . Typically, a member of our HR team and also representatives from the relevant graduate stream. Researching the HPRA and reviewing the role profile before the interview should help you prepare and give you an indication of what skills and competencies we will be looking for.

If I am not successful, can I apply again for future graduate placements?;

Yes, every year we begin a new recruitment cycle for the graduate programme. As part of this we will review every application that is received as part of our shortlisting process, regardless of whether it was unsuccessful previously. However, it is important to note we can only consider applications of recent graduates. Is this a paid position?

Yes, an annual salary is offered for graduate positions. Please refer to advertised role profile for more information.

How long is the position for?

The programme is for 12 months.

Do I need work experience?

There is no expectation that graduates should have any prior work experience. The application process acts as a platform for candidates to demonstrate their talents gained through life experiences, study, and research.

What is the structure of the Programme?

The programme consists of two separate streams.

Stream 1: Medical Devices - Consists of 2 six-month rotations in the areas of;

  • Assessment and Surveillance
  • Policy and Regulatory

Stream 2: Medicines on our Market - Consists of 3 four-month rotations in the areas of;

  • Authorising Medicines
  • Health Products Distribution
  • Inspections

Can I apply for more than one stream?

Yes, candidates can apply for more than one stream . Please include in your application form which stream you are applying for. When considering what streams to apply for, we encourage candidates to look at the qualifications and criteria required for each stream before submitting an application. Please refer to the 'What qualifications do I need to apply?' question below for more information.

What qualifications do I need to apply?

You must be on track for or have achieved a 2.1 honours bachelor degree (NFQ level 8) in any of the following:

Stream 1: Medical Devices

Stream 2: Medicines on our Market

Biomedical EngineeringPharmacy

In addition to this, you will need:

  • Excellent communication, teamwork and organisational skills.
  • Interest in contributing to the protection and enhancement of public and animal health through the regulation of medicines, medical devices and other health products.
  • Excellent data analysis skills.
  • Demonstrate initiative and team working capabilities.
  • Highly motivated with the ability to manage deadlines

I've already graduated; can I still apply for the Graduate Programme?

Yes. We welcome applications from candidates who have already recently graduated.

Am I guaranteed a job on completion of the graduate programme?

The purpose of the programme is to give candidates exposure to different areas within the stream they are appointed too. The aim is to make high-performing graduates viable candidates that can apply for long term roles within the HPRA.

When is the commencement date for the programme?

The commencement date for the next iteration of the programme is September 2025.

Where will I be based?

The successful candidate will be working in the HPRA offices a minimum, of two days per week and can avail of working remotely up to a maximum of three days per week subject to the terms of the policy. The specific days each week when you work at each location will be determined by your manager. The HPRA reserves the right to cease, vary or change the office/home location split during or after the review period. Notwithstanding any applicable hybrid working arrangement, you may be required to work at any specified location as may be reasonably required by the HPRA from time to time.
